The Very Famous Dempster Highway...

The Dempster Hwy is approximately 457 miles of gravel road which is the only road north to the Arctic waters in the Yukon or Northwest Territories.  It's completely desolate, and it passes through various First Nations territory before ending at the First Nations village of Inuvik on the Arctic.    It crosses the Arctic Circle.

The Dempster became notorious because it's a very dangerous drive.   There's no cell service.   Gasoline is available at only 2 locations along the entire 457 miles.  There are no vehicle support services....and sure as heck no fast food sources!

Because of the rugged gravel roads, motorists frequently have tire blowouts, and unless they're prepared, they can wait literally for hours before help may arrive.  As one Mountie told me: "You're completely on your own.  There is no help unless a passing motorist conveys your request for help back to a willing mechanic in Dawson.   But if you prepare appropriately, the scenery will change you."

Nevertheless, the highway is also renown for it's spectacular scenery, peaceful quiet, wildlife and just overall pristine wilderness.  Plus, I wanted to get to the Arctic.   So, I checked my tire pressure, loaded up with plenty of water and a box of Raisin Bran...and off I went.

And I didn't get far before the beauty and total solitude began...
